The ones they might have saved

Two brave souls have accepted my challenge, laid down last month, to write about "The one you might have saved," the horror movie victim whose death so affected you that you wish you could breach cinema's fourth wall, project yourself into the scene and pluck them from the jaws of peril.

Foxy Final Girl Stacie Ponder has named "The one I might have saved" in NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD's Barbara while pseudonymous stud (I should talk!) Pax Romano over at Billy Loves Stu: For Homos Who Love Horror waxes rhapsodic on the subject of CARRIE's ambitious body count in "The One (or Two or Possibly Three) I Might Have Possibly Saved."

These are great contributions, which I'll quote briefly to whet your appetites:

No one wants to watch the one who can't cope with the horrifying situation, the one who can't simply snap out of it and kick ass, the one who can't comprehend what's happening and who won't do a thing about it...the one who, in all honesty, is the most like us. Sure, we all want to think we'd be like Ben, formulating plans, setting zombies on fire and punching out honky jerks- or, we'd like to be Barbra 2.0 (from Tom Savini's 1990 NotLD remake), totin' shotguns, kicking ass, and shooting honky jerks in the forehead. Though we'd like to think it's not true, however, somewhere deep inside we all know that chances are we'd be more like Barbra '68 and we hate that.
Would I have tried to save Tommy Ross? Damn straight! To hell with those falling lights, electrical wires, and fire hoses that have seemingly come to life, I would have hoisted him over my shoulder and tried to beat a hasty retreat from the Bates High Prom... I am sure that the blow to his head would have given him amnesia, so once he came around, we'd be long gone and headed to a little shack somewhere in Malibu. I'd have made something up and convinced him that we were long time lovers...
This is great stuff. I hope more bloggers will join in on the fun. After all, there are so many left to save.

Addendum: Brash new blogger on the block JTH_09, whose dreams are as big as his sunglasses, has sent us "The ones I would've said," with at least one sad spoiler for HALLOWEEN RESURRECTION and Yours Truly, but that's the nature of this Beast.

A week or so ago I was watching one of my favorite horror films on TCM and when it ended I swore that I would write something about the "one I would have saved" but life keeps interfering with my blogging ambitions. I will try to gather my thoughts on the topic soon!

It's a great idea and I've enjoyed all the posts written so far.
