Honorable mention

Arbogast on Film is touched and flattered to have been name-checked in the most recent issue of Cineaste, by the mag's associate editor and film and theater blogger Robert Cashill (glowing coolly on the left). The occasion is Film Criticism in the Age of the Internet: A Critical Symposium, in which a handful of select writers and thinkers (among them, Mike D'Angelo, J. Hoberman, Kent Jones, Glenn Kenny, Karina Longworth, Richard Schickel, Girish Shambu, Amy Taubin) share their thoughts on the growth of Internet-exclusive film criticism and the dominance/prevalence/ubiquity of film bloggers in an age in which print critics are ever more falling by the wayside. Bob lists this blog as one of his bookmarks but goes on to say really profound and true stuff besides:

Just as anyone who appears in a porn film is a de facto porn star, so, too, does anyone who blogs on film become an instant expert on the subject, just by showing up online. But there are professionals who write (and think) very amateurishly and amateurs who know more about the niches of this or that genre than any professional ever will. What I like is a professional who lets his or her hair down on the Web in a manner distinct from the voice-from-the-mountaintop style of print reviewing... and an amateur who conveys a stockpile of information with clarity, style, and wit. Then again, I’m more often drawn to the subject of a posting than I am to the writer; the opposite is true in print, where the name above the title has been the draw.
I love how he doesn't have to mention my name, trusting that "clarity, style, and wit" will instantly bring to mind Arbogast on Film. Bob may not be my uncle but he honors me with this mention.

Sir Arbo,

Why don't you let your hair down and reveal to us which professional you may be? (You're not Jonathan Lapper, are you?)

You say:

..in which a handful of select writers and thinkers share their thoughts on the growth of Internet-exclusive film criticism.

So why did you include Karina Longworth in that group??? OUCH!!

Anyway, congrats Arbo. I'd rather read your thoughts on movies than the rest of that set anyday.

Gasp by gasp, you earned the distinction. But no resting on your laurels now, or your Hardys, either.

(Golly, this new dad sleep deprivation is a killer...)

Knock 'em dead,

Bob (who looks better grayed-out and irradiated-like)

A great honor, congratulations!

Also wanted to let you know that your "Bob's yer uncle!" references are getting at least one laugh. I've always hoped to work that into my vernacular, but have feared it might be misinterpreted.

I actually don't follow her writing, so I have no particular opinion yea or nay.

Ha! Adam... the "Bob's your uncle" reference is lost on me, but do tell, what was the fear you had about it? Is this like way over my head, or pay grade, or something?

Dang... and just when I thought I was about to earn Arbo's respect...
